Advanced Cruisers Bike Camp Explores New Terrain
By Lara Sheets, Program Support Specialist
Imagine spending your summer riding up hills, exploring new bike lanes and boulevards with a new batch of friends. With Advanced Cruisers, youth from 11-13 years old have the opportunity to tour new terrain while taking on more of a challenge by riding that extra mile in our Advanced Bike Camps.
Advanced Cruisers can expect to cycle between 5-20 miles a day, while exploring uncharted Portland territory. Last summer, campers had the opportunity of visiting sites such as Whitaker Pond with the Slough School Education Program and we plan to visit them again this summer.
Sheilagh Diez of the Columbia Slough Watershed Council has helped make this enriching partnership a reality. “The Slough School Education Program fosters the next generation of watershed stewards by offering classroom programs, field-based science education and service learning opportunities to K-12 students throughout the Columbia Slough Watershed. To support these efforts, Slough School mobilizes community volunteers, offers ongoing support to local teachers, and coordinates with community partners within the watershed.”
Thanks to partnerships like these, our Advanced Cruisers Bike Camps have the opportunity to experience other parts of Portland, while learning valuable information about our local watersheds. Our Bike Camps are about more than friendship and fostering confidence on the road. They also encourage relationships with our surrounding environment.
We also offer advanced camps for kids ages 8 – 11. For more information about our Bike Camps, please visit our website or call the office at (503) 288-8864.
