Bike Fair Season With PBOT Is Upon Us
We’re excited to continue partnering with @PBOTinfo and @portlandsundayparkways to bring barrier reducing bike fairs to communities all across Portland for another year. This season’s fairs kicked off two weeks ago at Multnomah Arts Center in South West, then last week we headed to Whitman Elementary school in South East.
At these free, family friend events we provide:
- Learn-to-ride for children and adults
- Helmets and helmet fitting courtesy of Trauma Nurses Talk Tough
- Bike safety activities to practice riding skills and the rules of the road
- Quick-fix bike repair courtesy of @b4hpdx
For many people, an event like this is the boost they need to get started with riding. Whether they’re bringing their bike out from the garage and need air in their tires, or they’ve never learned how to ride but always wanted to, these events make a difference! Between the two events, close to a dozen people learned how to ride a bike!
One mother we spoke with said she never learned how to ride a bike simply because no one ever taught her. Because she didn’t know how to ride, and no one else was around to teach, her son never learned either. The Bike Fair changed that! Our incredible Programs team got them set-up on bikes from our Learn-to-Ride fleet, and by the end of the event they were both pedaling around with ear-to-ear smiles!
This is just one story from one of the events. With more Bike Fairs on the calendar, there’s no telling how many more memories can be made!
We’re always looking for volunteers! If you’d like to help out at a community event like this, reach out to sophie@communitycyclingcenter.org
The next Bike Fair is June 6th at Rigler Elementary in Northeast Portland. See you there!
