Programs

The Community Cycling Center mission is to broaden access to bicycling and all its benefits through our hands-on programs, volunteer projects, and neighborhood bike shop. Our programs aim to improve individual health, environmental quality, and enhance the livability of our communities by helping people gain bicycle knowledge, skills, and confidence.

CLASSES
Classes are designed for adults interested in bicycling and the benefits it provides to individual health, environmental quality, and community livability. We design our classes with an understanding that people have different reasons, and levels of interest, around cycling. In a welcoming and fun environment, we will help you build your cycling knowledge, skills, and confidence to achieve your personal goal: whether it is to become a bike commuter, improve your health, be more active with your family, feel confident on Portland streets, or master the fascinating mechanical systems of the bike. Our classes are for everyone from the casual cyclist to the year-round commuter!

ADULT EARN-A-BIKE: CREATE-A-COMMUTER
The first program of its kind in the nation, the Adult Earn-A-Bike program (Create-a-Commuter) provides low-income adults with a commuter bike complete with lights, a lock, a helmet, a rack, tools and all the other accessories needed for successful year-round bike commuting. To receive the bike, each participant completes five hours of safe commuting and bike maintenance training. The groundbreaking program offers participants a flexible solution to meet their transportation needs, reducing barriers to work while promoting healthy activity.

YOUTH EARN-A-BIKE: BIKE CLUBS
Our Youth Earn-A-Bike program (Bike Clubs) are hands-on, experiential after-school workshops where low-income 9 to 12 year olds learn safe riding skills, basic bike maintenance, and the importance of wearing a properly fitted helmet. By working hard and participating throughout the course of the 12-session program, youth earn their own bicycle, lock, and helmet to take home! To learn which schools are currently hosting our Bike Safety Clubs, please contact us.

GET LIT
Our bike safety promotion program that provides free bike lights to unsuspecting (and unlit) cyclists.

WEE CYCLE

Children in our neighborhood need air in their tires and other assistance with their bikes. We’re here for them every day through our Wee Cycle program. Our staff is always ready to help neighborhood youth with basic bike repairs and to provide free helmets to low-income neighborhood youth.
