Our vision is to continue building a vibrant community where people of all backgrounds use bicycles to stay healthy and connected. We believe that all Portlanders should have the opportunity to experience the joy, freedom and health benefits of bicycling. In addition to delivering dynamic programs that center underserved communities, we also operate a retail and full service bike shop, including a membership DIY workspace where members can work on their bike projects.

Job Summary 

The Mechanic and Instructor Associate is a dynamic, youth-centered educator and flexible team player who supports both program delivery and behind-the-scenes operations. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in fast-paced environments, enjoys working with children and families, and can balance administrative responsibilities with hands-on programming. 

As a key part of our Programs team, you will: 

  • Coordinate and perform bike maintenance and repairs for program fleet bikes and participant bikes
  • Serve as a Bike Camp instructor for 3rd–8th grade youth from Title I school communities
  • Support CCC’s Repair Hub program with administrative tasks such as staff scheduling, materials logistics, and occasional field support 
  • Serve as a “floater,” providing on-the-ground support to instructors, students, and families as needed throughout the program season 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

Please note that the percentage indicators below represent an estimate of how much time each week will be spent fulfilling these functions. In terms of importance, all areas are valued equally. 

Program Facilitation & Mechanic Support (60%) 

  • Deliver engaging bike safety and mechanics education for after-school and summer youth programs 
  • Provide bike repair and maintenance for participant bikes and CCC fleet 
  • Lead safe and inclusive group rides, following CCC riding protocols 
  • Respond with compassion to youth behaviors using trauma-informed approaches
  •  Communicate effectively with families, school staff, and community partners
  •  Represent CCC positively at all program sites and events 
  • Adhere to safe riding practices and emergency procedures when leading on-bike activities in accordance with established ride leader protocols 

Includes the occasional administration of basic first aid consistent with your level of training (CPR/First Aid training provided upon hire) 

  • Assist in recording program outcomes and support periodic grant reporting efforts
  • Provide a consistent, positive, accessible, and engaging experience to all participants inclusive of race, class, gender identity, and background 

Administration and Other (40%) 

  • Assist with materials logistics (transportation, setup, breakdown) 
  • Assist Development Team with administrative tasks related to fundraising. 
  • Support hiring processes for additional team members 
  • Float to various program sites to fill gaps in instruction or support team capacity
  • Participate in team planning, debriefs, and training sessions 
  • Support Development and hiring efforts as needed with administrative tasks
  • Step in to assist during staff absences, high-demand events, or mechanical needs in the field
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS & CHARACTERISTICS 

REQUIRED 

  • Experience with bicycle mechanics, either professional or personal 
  • Prior personal, professional, or volunteer experience working with youth up to 16 years old from communities of color, immigrant communities, or mixed income housing. 
  • Prior personal, professional, or volunteer experience in group facilitation/work, preferably in an educational or informal education setting. 
  • Confidence and passion for navigating by bike and riding on the road with vehicles in an urban setting while following traffic laws and maintaining situational awareness. 
  • Proven commitment to social justice and creating and maintaining an inclusive environment for all. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, students, families, and supervisors
  • Highly motivated and adaptable while engaging with youth and families during high stress situations 
  • Commitment to creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment that emphasizes learning, compassion, and care. 
  • Basic computer skills 
  • Ability to ride a bicycle 10 miles per day and lift up to 25 pounds 

Reasonable accommodation will be made for staff with a disability 

  • Willing and able to complete a required CPR/First Aid certification prior to facilitating in-person instruction (CCC pays for this) 
  • Criminal background check required 

PREFERRED 

  • Bi-lingual (Spanish); strongly preferred 
  • Lived experience as a member of a marginalized community 
  • Existing relationships with North, Northeast, and/or East Portland Title I school communities
  • Experience leading group bike rides with youth and/or adults 
  • Basic knowledge of bicycles and their components, including bike mechanics 
  • Valid Driver’s License 
  • Previous experience with Community Cycling Center Bike Camps or Bike Clubs is highly desired, but not required
