Grant recipient brings bike maintenance & repair training to Cully neighborhood
We are excited to announce that Central Northeast Neighbors has named Andando en Bicicletas en Cully (ABC) – a local group of residents who have organized, with support from the Community Cycling Center and in partnership with Hacienda CDC – the recipient of a $3,000 grant that will bring bike maintenance and repair training to the Cully neighborhood.
Through the Community Cycling Center’s Understanding Barriers to Bicycling initiative, Hacienda residents worked to identify issues within their neighborhood that prevent access to bicycling. One major area of weakness that they’ve targeted is lack of knowledge about basic bicycle maintenance and repair skills, a significant factor that is limiting the usage of bicycles. Currently, there is nowhere in the community for residents to go to learn those skills. This grant will provide a “train the trainer” opportunity, allowing the Community Cycling Center staff to train members of ABC on basic bicycle maintenance and repair. With this knowledge, ABC will be able to offer community-led bike maintenance workshops to Hacienda residents.
Planning for the training will begin in January with hopes to have ABC members trained to lead charlas (clinics) by early summer. ABC plans to train up to 8 promotores (leaders), and host 13 clinics. Hacienda estimates that 50 families will be served under this initiative.
Bicycling is a key aspect of a livable, equitable and sustainable community. We are excited to have the opportunity to help Hacienda residents connect with one another and to empower the community with bicycle knowledge and leadership opportunities.
