A partnership between All Girls Camp & Sugar Wheel Works, what could be sweeter?
By Lara Sheets, Program Support Specialist
For over five years the Community Cycling Center has offered All Girls Camps to young aspiring cyclists. This summer, All Girls Camp returns with 4 sessions for beginning to advanced riders, ages 8-13. All Girls Camp is a unique opportunity to provide a comfortable environment for girls to build skills and confidence. The camps are taught by female instructors, and each camp will have the opportunity to visit with female leaders in the Portland bicycle community.
One of these leaders is Jude Kirstein, of Sugar Wheel Works. Sugar Wheel Works, formerly Epic Wheelworks, is a shop on N. Williams specializing in custom bike wheels. Jude began hosting our bike camps in the summer of 2009, and we are so excited to partner with her again this year. Jude’s success at starting her own business in a male dominated profession is inspiring to girls of all ages.
One happy Bike Camp parent shared her story with us. “My daughter came by [Sugar Wheel Works] today with her Community Cycling Center camp group and she hasn’t stopped talking about the visit. She even volunteered to patch my flat tonight. Just wanted to thank you for playing such an important role in inspiring future bike girls!”
A big thank you to Sugar Wheel Works, and to all of our partners who help us engage and inspire the next generation.
