Big Changes Ahead
The Community Cycling Center was founded as an education center almost 30 years ago to help build a vibrant community where people of all backgrounds use bicycles to stay healthy and connected. We have seen a lot of change in Portland since our inception but our love of bikes and the people who ride them hasn’t wavered.
Remote work, among other factors, has reduced daily bike commuters. As many reading this are probably aware, Portland’s bicycle commuters have decreased by 46% from 2016 to 2022. Unfortunately, a side-effect of this decrease has been reduced demand and revenue in our shop space. The Community Cycling Center Bike Shop has always been a reliable source of funding for our programs that provide bikes and safety instruction to the community. As this funding source becomes less reliable with the changing landscape of cycling in Portland, we realize that we will need to diversify our offerings in order to keep up with the new and changing demands if we are going to provide community services for another 30 years.
Today we are announcing that we are going back to our roots of being an education center and creating three new community spaces in place of our current bike shop on 17th & Alberta. We are creating a new membership-based DIY workspace, a retail storefront with new and used items, and a bike repair classroom. This new space will allow us to open the space to community members that want to wrench on their own bikes.
We will also be offering classes to members, non-members, and program participants. By creating this new membership-based DIY workshop and class space we will have an additional revenue stream to help grow our current programming to reach even more people throughout Portland.
We will be closing the shop for six weeks starting September 18th to October 31st to remodel the space.
We are so thankful for our wonderful community who have kept us going for the last 30 years and we hope you will support us for many more years to come.
