Celebrating The Partnerships Of the Food Delivery By Bike Program

Written by William Francis – Safe Routes to School Coordinator

We are writing to celebrate over a year of close collaboration with Living Cully! We’ve been working together with volunteers to deliver food out of the NE Emergency Food Program (NEFP) to approximately 180 families in the Cully neighborhood every week. Living Cully specializes in localized grassroots community organizing for anti gentrification and housing rights. Their work centers around low income, Black, Indigenous, People of color, mobile home residents, and renters in Cully– those who are most vulnerable to displacement and/or having their housing rights abused. Not only does the Cycling Center fully support and appreciate the valuable work Living Cully is engaged in, but through our support of Andando en Bici y Caminando (ABC) we felt that it was a natural partnership as both organizations have shifted their resources during the COVID-19 pandemic to meet the food insecurity needs of the communities we serve.

Living Cully’s Community Engagement Coordinator Mayra Torres, and Verde’s Environmental Educator Raina Brot-Goldberg established the initial relationship with NEFP at the beginning of the pandemic, bringing food to Cully’s mobile home park communities. Living Cully and Verde also engage apartment renters in the neighborhood, and so that is where the Community Cycling Center stepped in to offer support for the emergency food delivery program.

When we are not in a pandemic, Mayra focuses primarily on providing Cully mobile home park residents with resources that can help prevent their displacement. She also organizes monthly community meetings where resources and concerns are shared, and community power and leadership capacity is built.

Raina is an environmental educator who works directly with youth and adults to increase awareness around environmental justice issues that are relevant to the Cully community. After conducting community needs surveys that highlighted food insecurity as a major area of concern, Raina has taken on the role of Food Access Coordinator for Verde and has been a critical member of this collaboration. “Food justice is environmental justice and it aligned with my goals for the work I was doing with Verde”. Mayra had already created a relationship with NEFP prior to the beginning of the pandemic based on Verde and Living Cully’s community outreach survey results. Monday through Thursday, she and volunteers brought PPS lunches to give to youth living at Arbor Mobile Home Park, and on Fridays we were all at NEFP. “For almost a year my driveway became the place for families to come and grab food during the weekdays”, Mayra pointed out.

For Raina, what has been most fulfilling is making new and meaningful connections with Cully community members she does not typically engage with through her environmental education work. “I really appreciate the dialogues I have with community members, asking them what their needs are and working to support them in getting the resources they need”. For Mayra, aside from people’s happiness when they receive a food box, she has been impressed by the amount of work we have all accomplished together. She wants to especially shout out the support we have received from our dedicated volunteers. When her volunteers thank her for her work, she makes sure to tell them “I wouldn’t be able to do this without your support, I am here to lead and support you. Your leadership and dedication make this happen”. In regards to the collaboration with the Community Cycling Center, both Mayra and Raina have been very pleased with the way our organizations and volunteers have come together around a common goal. Through the rest of the summer Raina is partnering with the Audubon Society and Hacienda to run summer youth camps, while Mayra will be focusing on community organizing and partnership building.

Verde and Living Cully pursued multiple funding sources for this emergency food delivery program. Two grants from Oregon Health Authority (OHA) allowed us to buy food and get stipends for our volunteers, provide four rounds of $50 WinCo gift cards to our recipients and volunteers, make large purchases of culturally-specific foods for recipients, and purchasing items for two rounds “care kits” that provided non-consumable household items to our recipients. Portland Bureau of Emergency Management has also been an amazing resource to the program, supplementing the “care packages” with PPE and health care items. We were also able to throw our volunteers a one year anniversary party complete with birría de res, homemade tortillas, local fruit, cake, a piñata, and a small plant as a gift.

On that note we would like to give a shout out to some of our critical assembly and distribution volunteers:

Melecia Torres, Carolina Torres, Maira Galindo, Carmen Ortiz, Brit Abuya, Evelyn Easton Koehler (Americorps Intern with Verde), Candelaria Francisco (PGE Intern with Verde), Andando en Bici y Caminando (ABC) Thom Handa, Anna Grace, Lisa Timmerman, Jordan Bailey, Rob Carpenter, Brenna Bailey, Janelle Bickford, Zach Fitzgerald, and Ben Pollak. And one last shout out to our partners at NEFP who have been doing amazing work: A’Jay Scarpio, Alex Taylor, Daniel Irons, Jordan Heath, and Theo Montgomery.
