We’re excited to offer a wide-range of classes for all skill levels and interests in our new classroom at 1714 NE Alberta St.– right next door to the Workspace and Bike Shop. From learning the names of bicycle components to bleeding brakes and building wheels, our classes have it covered! Your class fees directly support our no-cost community programming, including Bike Camp, Club, and more. View the class calendar below!

 

Class Descriptions & Registration

 

Basic Bicycle Mechanics 101 (BBM)
Our basic bicycle maintenance course teaches participants bicycle anatomy, how to change a flat tire, the basics of how to maintain their drivetrain. By the end of this course students will be able to name the components and frame of their bicycle, change a flat tire, and discern when to lubricate and replace their bicycle chain.

Basic Bicycle Mechanics 101 (BBM)

Intro to Shifting
This course includes discussion of the anatomy, function, and basic adjustment of front and rear derailleurs. By the end of this class students will be able to index and perform basic adjustments of 3×9 shifting systems. This is a two-part class.

Intro to Shifting

Cable Rim Brakes
Includes discussion, of cantilever, caliper, and linear pull rim brakes. Students will adjust pads, spring, and cable tension of a linear pull brake system. Topics like modulation, cable tension, and brake set up will be defined and students will be able to discuss each brake type’s benefits and detriments in those terms.

Cable Disc Brakes
Includes discussion, and adjustment of single and dual dynamic pad cable actuated disc brake systems. Topics like modulation, cable tension, and brake set up will be defined and students will be able to discuss the benefits and detriments of a cable actuated system in those terms.

Cable Disc Brakes

Hydraulic Brakes

Includes discussing the benefits of a hydraulic braking system and learning how the system functions. Students will understand and be able to replicate the bleeding procedure for SRAM’s DOT fluid hydraulic braking system, and Shimano’s mineral oil hydraulic braking system. This course will be split into 3 two hour sessions, over the course of three weeks.

Three part class, 2hours per session over three sessions. 6hours total

Wheel Truing

Participants will learn the theory of spoke tension and the effects of the hub and rim on spoke tension, spoke replacement, and lateral and radial truing of a wheel. Wheels will be supplied to participants, but you will have time at the end of class to work on your own wheel if you have a wheel you’d like to bring in.

Wheel Building

This course covers wheel anatomy, lacing patterns and their application, spoke selection, and hub and rim compatibility. By the end of class participants will have built a complete wheelset. Teaching materials for class will be supplied. Participants will not get to keep the wheels they build as the parts will be re-used for future classes. This class or proof proficiency will be a prerequisite for Advanced Wheel Building.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations made up to one week prior to the class can receive a full refund, cancellations between one week and 24 hours may change to another date. Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice will not be refunded.
