Team Tailwind Member Profile: Alison & Jay Graves
Just in time for National Bike Month, we are celebrating Team Tailwind, our growing crew of monthly donors who support the Community Cycling Center’s transformative work. Over the next several weeks, we will be highlighting a few Team Tailwind members. Thanks, Team!
Who are you? What do you do/enjoy?
We’re Jay and Alison Graves, and we’re proud to be longtime supporters of the Community Cycling Center. Jay was a founding board member, helping the organization through its early days. Alison joined in 2005 and did a variety of things, ranging from Bike Club volunteer, Communications/Development Director, and then Executive Director until 2013. Our love for community and bicycles endures and we continue to work on projects like Scenic Bikeways and the Salmonberry Trail.
What about the Community Cycling Center inspires you to give monthly?
We give monthly because it is simply one of the best investments for building a healthy, connected community. The name says it all: Community Cycling Center. As a former bike shop owner, Jay loves the cycling emphasis, particularly Holiday Bike Drive and bike recycling. Alison loves the community emphasis, with a soft spot for Hacienda and New Columbia programs. Whether getting a first bike or a fixed bike, a safe route or a few friends to ride with, the Community Cycling Center is there.
Why do you feel it’s important to give monthly?
Monthly gifts are the most important way to support ongoing programs and help the organization respond to opportunities and weather crises. Annual gifts are fantastic, but monthly donations are essential for programs that operate throughout the year.
What was your first bicycle? How did it make you feel?
Jay’s first bike was a green Schwinn 20″ that he pedaled around the block as fast as he could so he could skid into a pile of leaves. Later he’d learn how to wheelie, a skill he continues to practice every chance he gets.
Alison’s first bike was a purple Stingray with a flowered banana seat. She’d ride through the neighborhood with her brothers and friends with a smile almost as wide as her outstretched arms.
When you sign up as a member of Team Tailwind this month, you will be automatically entered to win one of our four gift baskets, each of which includes a custom jigsaw puzzle of the Community Cycling Center’s mural! Also, you will be on the same team as Alison and Jay, which is its own reward!
Donors who pledge $30/month or more receive a 10% discount on new parts and accessories at the bike shop and invitations to special Team gatherings throughout the year.
